The University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources is pleased to announce the publication of two new publications: Irrigated Pasture Production in the Central Valley of California and California Dairies: Protecting Water Quality.
Irrigated Pasture Production in the Central Valley of California is an easy step-by-step guide that will help you establish and maintain an irrigated pasture – a mixture of perennial grasses and legumes suited to most areas of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys.
Using this publication you’ll learn how to plan in advance for an irrigated pasture, select plant species, and prepare the seedbed. You’ll also learn about special fertilization, weed control, and irrigation issues. Also included are chapters on hay making, forage and grazing management, leases, and grazing economics.
California Dairies: Protecting Water Quality is a primer for consultants, local agencies, and lending institutions that summarizes practical approaches and technologies that have been implemented by progressive dairy producers to protect surface and groundwater quality.
Since each dairy is different, practices must be tailored to each situation. This guide discusses three types of dairies – dairies with irrigated cropland, dairies with non-irrigated pasture and hay fields, and dairies with limited cropland – and outlines a variety of management measures for each. It also summarizes four critical components that progressive dairy producers have successfully implemented to protect water quality.
Irrigated Pasture Production in the Central Valley of California, (ANR Publication 21628, ISBN 978-1-60107-423-2), is only $12.00, California Dairies: Protecting Water Quality (ANR publication 21630, ISBN 978-1-60107-426-3), is only $10.00. All can be ordered by calling 1-800-994-8849 or by logging onto http://anrcatalog.ucdavis.edu. Shipping and handling is added to the cost of each Internet or phone order. These publications are also available at many UC County Cooperative Extension offices.

Gaining Ground: Transitioning to Organic Farming
Gaining Ground covers all bases – from soil-building and planting to certification and marketing – revealing an approach that is much more than simply farming without chemicals. Based on interviews with over 80 of Canada’s organic or transitional farmers across the country, this book provides valuable, practical advice and connects you to a national network of organic farmers, the next best thing to having an organic farmer next door. Farmer wisdom is supplemented with a wealth of scientific information from around the globe. The key tools of organic farming, like pest management, crop rotations and green manures, composting and equipment are addressed in Gaining Ground. In addition, it discusses the difficult shift in thinking from an input-output approach to an integrated, whole-system approach based on ecological principles. The handbook includes an extensive list of resources for further reading. Please see www.cog.ca/gainingground.htm for further information and to order.
